Tennis is less popular than other sports such as baseball, football and sumo wrestling in Japan, but after her win the Yomiuri newspaper said Ms Osaka was a “new heroine Japan can be proud of”.

“The combination of her strength and childlike innocence is her charm,” the newspaper said.

Ms Osaka faced hostility during what should have been a moment of joy as boos and whistles rang out around the Arthur Ashe stadium, and lowered the visor she had been wearing to hide her tears.

Ms Williams then put her arm around her and said: “Let’s make this the best moment we can, let’s give everyone the credit where credit’s due and let’s not boo any more.”

“I know everyone was cheering for her and I’m sorry it had to end like this,” said Ms Osaka. “I just want to say thank you for watching the match.”

She said it was “always my dream to play Serena in the US Open finals,” and, addressing her opponent, she said: “I’m really grateful I was able to play with you.”

She then bowed, to applause from the crowd.

Denmark could pick a side including futsal players against Wales in the Nations League on 9 September. Senior players have refused to sign a new national team agreement with the Danish Football Association (DBU) in a dispute over commercial rights.

#AceSportsNews – Sept.06: Denmark players ‘getting to know each other

Uefa Nations League: Denmark v Wales
Venue: Aarhus Stadium Date: Sunday, 9 September Kick-off: 17:00 BST
Coverage: Live on BBC Radio 5 live, Radio Wales and Radio Cymru, the BBC Sport website and BBC Sport app, plus live text commentary.

The 24-man squad is also without Danish Superliga or First Division players.

The DBU has confirmed third tier, fourth tier and futsal players will make up the squad for a friendly with Slovakia and then against Wales.

Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet reports that Denmark’s team will consist of several futsal players, a variant of football played on a hard court and similar to five-a-side but with a smaller and harder ball.

We have to solve this conflict now, not just dig the ditches deeper

Christian EriksenDenmark midfielder

There are a total of eight players from Avarta, Skovshoved IF, IF Skjold Birkerød, Hellerup IK, Hillerød Fodbold – Danish Second Division clubs – who have made themselves available.

One of those, Avarta striker Christian Offenberg, 30, is the league’s top scorer with five goals from six matches so far this season.

Players from fourth-tier clubs Jægersborg Boldklub, Vanløse IF and Kastrup Boldklub have also been named in the squad.

A total of five players from the 24 called up were in Denmark’s national futsal squad for their last match against Greenland in May.

Denmark manager Age Hareide and assistant Jon Dahl Tomasson will not take charge of the team, with Euro 92 winner John Jensen in temporary charge.

The DBU has decided that Hareide should not be involved as the team will consist of players he has not selected.

On Sunday, the DBU rejected an offer by the Danish Football Players’ Association (Spillerforeningen) to play the two fixtures under the terms of their previous deal.

Tottenham and Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen is a member of the Spillerforeningen and on Tuesday the players’ body again offered to fulfil the fixtures under the old terms.

“We again offer a temporary extension of the old agreement – and then we travel to Slovakia today,” Eriksen said in a statement.

“All in all, the whole national team, together we enter the agreement and together we save the face of Danish football. We are right here and want to play football for Denmark – as always.

“We have to solve this conflict now, not just dig the ditches deeper. So we’re happy to extend our hand again… let’s renew the old deal by one month.”

Denmark reached the last 16 of the 2018 World Cup in Russia before losing to Croatia on penaltiesDenmark reached the last 16 of the 2018 World Cup in Russia before losing to Croatia on penalties

Denmark risk being barred by European governing body Uefa if they fail to fulfil either of the fixtures.

The Denmark women’s team boycotted a World Cup qualifier against Sweden in October 2017 in a dispute over employment conditions.

Uefa ruled out ejecting the team from qualification, instead awarding Sweden a 3-0 win and fining the DBU £18,000.

But the DBU was warned that Denmark would be ruled out of any Uefa tournament if it cancelled another match in the next four years.

The DBU therefore had no choice but to select whatever squad it could for the upcoming matches.

In a statement released last weekend, DBU chief executive officer Claus Bretton-Meyer described the situation as “deeply regrettable”.

He added: “It is crucial for the future of Danish football. If the games are not played, we may be fighting millions in fines and exclusions for both national teams – and Danish football will be returned to the stone age in many areas.”

Former Denmark and Celtic midfielder Morten Wieghorst says the situation is hugely damaging.

“I think chaos is a very good description,” Wieghorst told BBC Sport Wales.

“It looks like we will field a team of futsal players and lower league… that is not good for Danish football. Deep down I still want to believe this will not happen. They need to sort it out so the real Denmark players can play.

“If it is going to be this alternative team, it is going to be a bit of a joke. It makes me feel bad. If we play an under-strength team against Wales it will be a massive joke. Danish football’s reputation will be hurt.”

Before the Denmark game, Wales begin their Nations League campaign on 6 September against the Republic of Ireland at Cardiff City Stadium.

What is futsal?

Archive: Is futsal the secret to Brazilian success?

  • Rather than a traditional 11-a-side game of football, futsal has five players on each team. It is played with a small ball with 30% less bounce than the average football.
  • Futsal is played indoors with two 20-minute halves. A stop clock is used and time-outs are permitted.
  • Futsal gets its name from the Spanish ‘fútbol de sala’ or Portuguese ‘futebol de salão’ which translates to ‘lounge football’ in English.
  • The exact origins of futsal are disputed. Argentinean coach Juan Carlos Ceriani created an indoor 11-a-side game in Montevideo in Uruguay in 1930 for local competitions in YMCAs while the first rules of a similar version of the game played in the streets in Sao Paulo were recorded in Brazil in 1936.
  • Fifa became the game’s governing body in 1989 with the first ever Fifa Futsal World Championship being held in the Netherlands that same year.
  • An estimated 30 million people play worldwide with Fifa calling it “the fastest growing indoor sport in the world”.

#WorldCup2018 First Time Since 1990 England beat Sweden 2-0 to reach semi-finals thanks to Harry Maguire and Dele Alli headers now they face Croatia or hosts Russia in their next game on Wednesday at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium for a place in next Sunday’s final #AceSportsDesk reports

#AceSportsReport – July.07: England are into the World Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1990 thanks to Harry Maguire and Dele Alli headers against Sweden: Gareth Southgate’s side now face hosts Russia or Croatia on Wednesday in Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium for a place in next Sunday’s final #AceSportsDesk reports

Maguire rose highest to thump home Ashley Young’s first-half cross, the eighth of England’s 11 goals at this World Cup to come from a set-piece………And Alli was unmarked to turn home Jesse Lingard’s cross against a lacklustre Sweden in Samara.

England keeper Jordan Pickford pulled off three fantastic saves to keep Sweden out – first turning away a Marcus Berg header, then producing a low stop from Viktor Claesson and finally tipping Berg’s shot over the bar…………….

England will discover their semi-final opponents later, with Russia and Croatia kicking off at 19:00 BST:

The Three Lions are in the last four for only the third time. They went on to win their home tournament in 1966 but lost to West Germany on penalties in 1990.

But the peculiar way this World Cup has shaped up means they will now play the team ranked 20th or 70th in the world for a place in the final – against either Belgium or France.

Pickford’s flying save keeps out Marcus Berg’s header for Sweden

England lay down a marker

England not only reached the World Cup semi-finals for the first time since Italia 90, they did the job under the pressure of the occasion and the requirement to back up the victory over Colombia on penalties in the last 16 – with all of the mental toll that will have taken.

It was not the perfect performance by any means. They started sluggishly and surely gave goalkeeper Pickford far too much work to do for Southgate’s liking in the second half.

On this day, with expectation rising and the unmistakable feeling around this sweeping Samara Stadium that the World Cup is really reaching the business end, England delivered.

Southgate will, of course, want those flaws addressed – but when the World Cup reaches the knockout stage it is the result that counts and England have now won two knockout games after failing to taste victory in one for 12 years.

They have fallen short on so many occasions that an England team who rises to the occasion are worthy of the highest praise.

England, for all the talk, knew they had this history to contend with and it is to the credit of the calm and measured Southgate that he has not only led the team with such confidence and composure, but he has now guided one of the most inexperienced squads here in Russia to the last four.

Southgate and England deserve huge credit – and now those expectation levels will rise even more.

Pickford and Maguire come of age

World Cup 2018: Harry Maguire heads in the opener for England against Sweden

Maguire and goalkeeper Pickford both had occasional moments of uncertainty early in this World Cup as they understandably took a little time to adjust to the unique pressures of this showpiece.

Since the knockout phase began, Everton’s 24-year-old keeper and Leicester City’s giant defender, 25, have been simply immense.

Maguire may be built in the old-fashioned mould, but he is also a player with the sort of ambition and power Southgate loves in the three-man defensive system he settled on.

And it was Maguire who gave England the control they needed in Samara when he met Young’s corner and powered a header past Robin Olsen on the half-hour.

It summed up the centre-back’s recent performances.

As for Pickford, he just carried on from where he left off after that magnificent penalty save from Carlos Bacca in the shootout win over Colombia.

England needed to beware any sort of Sweden revival at the start of the second half and it was Pickford who ensured they were not given a lifeline with a supreme one-handed saves from Berg’s header and Claesson’s shot.

Pickford has been desperate to keep a clean sheet at this World Cup and he fully deserved to keep Sweden out with a faultless display of goalkeeping.

This was the day Maguire and Pickford proved they have come of age with England.

Match stats – Alli is second youngest scorer

  • The eight goals England have scored from set-pieces is the most by a team at a World Cup since Portugal in 1966 (also eight).
  • Sweden have lost three of their past four matches against England, a run which follows 12 consecutive games without defeat against them between 1979 and 2006.
  • Six of England’s last 11 goals against Sweden have been scored via headers, all from different players (Sol Campbell, Steven Gerrard, Gareth Barry, Andy Carroll, Maguire and Alli).
  • England – who scored with both shots on target on Saturday – have found the net with 10 of their past 13 shots on target at this World Cup.
  • England have now scored 11 goals in a World Cup for only the second time, also doing so in their victorious year of 1966.
  • Alli is the second youngest player to score for England at the World Cup (22 years and 87 days), behind only Michael Owen (18 years and 190 days against Romania in 1998).
  • Maguire became the first player to score their first England goal in a World Cup knockout match since Rio Ferdinand in 2002 against Denmark.
  • Pickford made three saves in this match and became the youngest England goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet in a World Cup match (24 years and 122 days).

Argentina players are “devastated” after their unexpected 3-0 loss to Croatia at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Nizhny Novgorod. FC Barcelona star striker Messi’s squad, who have only one point after their two group-stage games, is now in danger of missing the World Cup round of 16. (updated 08:53 22.06.2018)

“We are devastated. It’s not the best time to analyze anything now. We just need to live through this moment,” Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano told journalists on Thursday.

Argentina head coach Jorge Sampaoli said on Thursday that he takes full responsibility for his team’s disappointing defeat to Croatia in Nizhny Novgorod on Thursday.

“You are right, I am the one who makes the final decision. This defeat is my responsibility because I made the game plan,” Sampaoli told journalists.

He emphasized that his team failed to get the ball to Messi enough, while the mistake committed by Caballero, which led to Ante Rebic’s opening goal “threw Argentina off course” and they were never able to recover.

Head coach Jorge Sampaoli said on Thursday that Argentina’s captain Lionel Messi’s “uniqueness fades” when the Barcelona forward plays for his national team.

“Do not compare him [Cristiano Ronaldo] to Messi, because Messi’s uniqueness fades [when he’s] with the national team. Maybe the other players cannot adjust to him and this is my fault too,” Sampaoli told journalists.

The coach added that he does not feel “shame”, but “true pain” after his team failed to beat Croatia, and Argentina need to “give everything in their final group game against to have any opportunity of advancing to the next round.”

Croatia Played “Amazingly” in Tough Match Against Messi’s Squad

A stunning and spectacular second half performance was put on by the Ante Rebic, Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic trio, who scored for the Croats and eventually booked a spot for their team in the FIFA World Cup round of 16.

Croatia head coach Zlatko Dalic praised his side’s “amazing” performance as they swept aside Argentina’s powerful squad.

“I believed in my team from the very beginning, though I didn’t think that we would reach the knockout stage after the second match. I’m glad that it happened so early. It’s not Argentina who played poorly, it’s us who played amazingly,” Dalic told journalists.

Twitter Shocked as Messi Can’t Save Argentina From Crushing Defeat by Croatia

“We have passed the group stage, we have beaten the strong team that has the world’s best player, we played this great match, but we need to remain humble. I want my players to stay as hungry for the victory as they are, only this way we’ll be able to achieve good results at the tournament,” the head coach said.

Meanwhile, Croatia captain Luka Modric said on Thursday that his side “played perfectly” after easily dispatching Argentina 3-0. Modric scored his side’s second goal with a right-footed strike into the right hand corner of the goal from outside the penalty area and was named man of the match.

“We have completed the main goal — we have reached the knockout stage, and we are very happy… Our victory could look easy, but it isn’t. We deserve this victory, the first goal was scored after the goalkeeper’s mistake and we were lucky. We played perfectly, it was the only way to beat Argentina,” Modric told journalists.

The captain stressed that the teamwork in the second half helped Croatia to succeed.

Croatia defender Dejan Lovren said on Thursday that his team played excellent defensively against Argentina and their captain and FC Barcelona star striker Lionel Messi.

“I am happy. [This win] is a great result for the team and the entire country. I believed from the very beginning that we could win. The entire team were excellent in defense, while we also managed to create chances. Of course we studied Messi, he is one of the best players in the world, but even he can be stopped. We had a plan against Argentina’s team and not only Messi,” Lovren told journalists.
